Jahmar Young's Hoop Dreams....

Growing up in East Baltimore Jahmar Young aka "JY" always had "Hoop Dreams" but like most young men growing up in the streets of Baltimore JY was sidetracked by the streets & what was going on in his environment. He had his share of getting in trouble & his share of run in's with the law. But JY was blessed to have had people in his corner who believed in him. He started playing AAU Basketball at a young age when his skills started to develop. He continued to play AAU Ball until he went to high school, he attended Northern High School where he really started to excel & make a name for himself; he spent three years there than he enrolled in Laurinburg Prep School. From there Jahmar earned himself a scholarship to New Mexico State. His journey is far from over, if it's the Lord's Will the next stop will be the NBA for JY. Until than Jahmar continues to work hard at improving his game & he uses his father's death & his daughter's birth as motivation.

2007-08 (Freshman): In his first season with the Aggies, Jahmar Young was a vital component in the NMSU offense. He was one of six players that averaged 10 points or more per game. Young averaged 10.3 points per contest in 21 appearances in the Crimson and White. He started in five games and shot 43.9 percent from the field and 81.6 percent from the free-throw line. Young also posted 26 steals and 22 assists as a freshman. In only his second WAC game, Young torched Boise State for a career-high 33 points in Boise, Idaho (Jan. 10) to give the Aggies a 3-0 start in league play. He was the first Aggie to score 33 points since Duane John accomplished the feat against New Mexico, Dec. 3, 2003. Young scored in double-figures in 11 games. At Louisville (Dec. 22), Young had 11 points, which began a four-game streak of double-digit scoring performances. In the next game, he provided 12 points against Alcorn State (Dec. 31). Young then posted 12 points in only 17 minutes before he was sidelined with an ankle injury in the WAC season opener at Idaho (Jan. 2). After missing the Fresno State game (Jan. 5) because of the injury, Young rebounded with the 33-point effort against the Broncos. In the first meeting of the year with Nevada (Jan. 24), he posted 19 points. His next double-digit scoring performance was against Boise State (Feb. 9) when Young supplied 18 points off the bench. To end the regular season, he scored in double-figures in three of the last four games; 18 at Nevada (Feb. 28), 11 versus San Jose State (March 6) and 12 against Hawai’i (March 8). Young continued the trend with 11 points against Idaho (March 13) in the Aggies quarterfinal game of the WAC Tournament. In conference games, Young ranked ninth in steals per game with 1.29.

High School: Young was rated as the No. 26 best prep recruit by hoopscooponline.com. As a youngster, he played for various AAU programs, including the DC Assault and Cecil Kirk. In 2004, Young averaged 18.3 points per game and shot 47.5 percent from the field in a four-game tournament for Cecil Kirk. Young, who shot 50 percent from 3-point range and 64.3 percent from the free-throw line, also averaged 2.8 assists and 2.5 rebounds during the tournament. Against Nike Team Florida in 2004 (July 21), Young went 11-for-23 from the field and 5-for-7 from 3-point land to lead his team with 34 points.

Personal: Young was born in Baltimore, Md., and he is the son of Clinton and Beverly Young. He is majoring in theatre arts.

Graffiti is a Form of Art ....Not a Crime....

First & foremost I would like to give a Shout Out to all the Artist who participated in the Steady Baltimore Urban Eyes; Fuel for the Arts Fest. Suppose that Leonardo, Monet, Picasso, or any of the recognized artisans of Western European culture were alive in the present day. Then, suppose that one of these famous artists decided to paint a masterpiece on the side of your house or on your front door or on a wall in your neighborhood. Would Picasso or Monet's markings be graffiti or art or vandalism or graffiti art? The answer may vary across people, but I would claim that those markings are art in the form of graffiti. Their markings would qualify as vandalism only if they appeared on private or public property without permission. The same answer holds for the present day, genre of graffiti known as graffiti art.

Graffiti art originated in the late 1960's, and it has been developing ever since. However, it is not readily accepted as being art like those works that are found in a gallery or a museum. It is not strictly denied the status of genuine art because of a lack of form or other base aesthetic elements. Most of the opposition to graffiti art is due to its location and bold, unexpected, and unconventional presentation, but its presentation and often illegal location does not necessarily disqualify it as art. I elucidate how some forms of graffiti can be accepted as art. This type of graffiti is known as graffiti art, subway art, or spraycan art. The arguments of vandalism and unconventional presentation as negating the ability of some graffiti to be art is usurped by an explanation of those properties apparent in some forms of graffiti that do qualify it, aesthetically, as art. To show this, I provide a historical context of graffiti, and then I provide persuasive evidence that graffiti art is art.

The origins of graffiti go back to the beginnings of human, societal living. Graffiti has been found on uncovered, ancient, Egyptian monuments, and graffiti even was preserved on walls in Pompeii. Graffiti is the plural form of the Italian word grafficar. In plural, grafficar signifies drawings, markings, patterns, scribbles, or messages that are painted, written, or carved on a wall or surface. Grafficar also signifies "to scratch" in reference to different wall writings ranging from "cave paintings", bathroom scribbles, or any message that is scratched on walls. In reference to present day graffiti, the definition is qualified by adding that graffiti is also any unsolicited marking on a private or public property that is usually considered to be vandalism.

Modern graffiti art originated in New York City, and it was known first as "New York Style" graffiti. This art form began in the late 1960's when teens used permanent markers to tag or write their names, followed by the number of the street on which they lived, in subway cars. This trend originated with the appearance of "Taki 183" which was the tag of a Greek American boy named Demitrius. Tagging soon became a way to get one's name known throughout the city. However, it should be noted that tagging appeared in Philadelphia before New York. The monikers, "Cornbread" and "Top Cat" were well known in Philadelphia, and when Top Cat's style appeared in New York, it was dubbed as "Broadway Style" for its long skinny lettering.

The advent of the spray paint allowed for the tag to develop in size and color. For it was not enough just to have one's name scrawled over any available and visible surface because everyone was doing this. The spraycan separated the taggers from the artists in that color, form, and style could be emphasized creatively with this new tool to produce s tag as a part of an overall artistic production. The tag which is monochromatic and a writing style that just about anyone can do, gave way to the throw-up, which is a two color tag usually in outline or bubble-like lettering. Again this style is not too difficult, but soon more complicated styles evolved. The stamp is a little harder and involves the use straight letters to produce a 3-D effect. The piece, which is short for masterpiece, appeared next, and it is a large multicolor work. A production is a piece that is usually on the scale of a mural, and it involves original or familiar cartoon characters in addition to the writer or graffiti artist's name. It should be noted that every graffiti form listed involves the artist's name, whether as the central feature or as an ornament within the piece because writers want to be known. Hence, finding new and creative ways to display one's tag in a highly visible place, as opposed to just scribbling it everywhere, was the fundamental force spurring the development of modern graffiti art.

In summary, some forms of graffiti become art according to four criteria. First, graffiti art is separated from everyday graffiti markings by the artist's intention to produce a work of art. Second, graffiti art has an established history of development in style and technique. Third, graffiti art even has been recognized by the art world. A fourth criterion is that the public response to graffiti art indicates that it is art. Whether or not all of the public agrees that graffiti art is good, bad, or extremely valuable is a different discussion about evaluation and not whether or not graffiti art is art. The evaluative concerns actually play more into where, when, and how graffiti art should be displayed.

Therefore, graffiti in the form of spraycan art is art. It has form, color, and other base properties as well as an arrangement of these elements into structures that qualify it aesthetically as being art. Just doing something with spray paint might make it graffiti, but it does not necessarily qualify it as art or graffiti art. In addition, when the spraycan art is analyzed according to the artist's intention and value to audience, there is even more evidence to suggest that it is genuine art. The only obstacle that has hindered the general acceptance of graffiti art is its location and presentation. However, the instances of acceptance of graffiti art by the art world shows that conventional methods of presentation are not all that matters in determining if something is art. And graffiti art is not to be disqualified as art simply because it might appear unsolicited. In short, graffiti in the form of spray can art is art like any other work that might be found in a gallery or a museum.

Youthful souls will have the opportunity to observe a multitude of street art presentations and performances. Aspiring artists will have the opportunity to meet productive local artists and to educate themselves on today's possibilities as creators in society.

• Sake, Leo Brady, JaziRock, Refuge, Booda Monk, Curve, Killawatt and several other street artists will host workshops and exhibitions relating to their skill set.

I'm not gonna put a lot of energy into this blog, but it does seem that Mariah Carey & Eminem are licking shots at each other. Eminem just released a track called "The Warning" if I'm not mistaken that's the correct name but don't hold me to it. I'm sure by now we've all heard & seen Mariah's video to her song "Obsessed". This particular character in the video is depicted to be Eminem at least that's what I got from it & apparently Eminem did to. The main reason I even wanted to do this blog is because the track Eminem just released is by far one of the best diss records I've heard this year or in awhile for that matter. Talk about airing out the dirty laundry listen to these tracks.

"Break a Leg" is a well known saying in show business which means "good luck". It is typically said to actors before they go out onto stage to perform. In this case the phrase "Break a Leg" didn't bring much "good luck" to actor/rapper Drake, it all most seems like he reenacts his character "Jimmy" from the sitcom "Degrassi". I must say in this mere moment of tragedy Lil Wayne managed to bring humor to a bad situation. I think Drake will be fine at least I hope so & I wish him a quick recovery so he can get back to making HOTT music. But word to the wise next time Drake "Hop Up On Your Good Foot" LMAO!!!

Now some folks are gonna see this blog & immediately build doubt. Which is understandable I just ask, no I beg that you research for yourself. This documentary speaks on a lot of the topics I've already spoke on in previous blogs. Like the Illuminati for instance. Me & my fellow colleague (JOEY) has built on this topic time in time again, how we believe some rappers are (Masons). Just think about it, once your money gets to a certain level, I believe the "ELITE" will sought after you. Once again there's no proof behind my theory it's just my train of thought, but it is logical. I must admit I never thought Tupac was a Mason, I've always thought he was the rebellious type. But it all makes sense to me now. Even Nelly was a surprise but if you look at his numbers over the years its not that surprising now that I think about it. To name a few, I believe Nas, Common, Puffy, Jay-Z, T.I., Mos Def & a lot more are among the "ELITE". I'm not accusing none of these guys of any type of government conspiracy or anything of that nature. I'm simply saying "POWER" is everything & the "POWER" all those guys I named possess is they all have money & most importantly they all have influence over the "PEOPLE". Anyone who can influence a Culture or Nation is POWERFUL so why not let them join the team??? Feel Me??? Once again there's no proof behind my theory, simply my train of thought. Shit!!! Don't get me wrong I wouldn't mine being apart of the "ELITE" myself that's why I'm studying now.

A "Undying Love"

A Undying Love. At least that's what Nas thought he had, I really don't know the situation between Nas & Kelis but I do know towards the end it "seems" Nas caught a raw deal. A few months back it was "alleged" that Kelis had a sex tape with underground rapper Infra Red, I guess her "Milkshake" really do bring the boys the yard. For the record I never saw the tape but Wendy Williams claims to have a copy. Let's fast forward the situation, we all know Nas & Kelis was Married, we also know Nas filed for a divorce back in April & they were expecting a baby.

Well they had their baby boy. His name is "Knight". Most people are probably wondering why would Nas name his son "Knight", I'm not sure either but I do know the meaning behind it, I also know Nas is a very well educated & conscious brother.

The devoted champion of a lady.


But here's where things get worst, it was reported that Nas was not allowed in the hospital when his son was born. I have three kids of my own & I probably would had went to jail if I was told I couldn't be present for their birth. But to put the icing on the cake Kelis was awarded Spousal & Child Support From Nas. Nas must pay Kelis $44,000 a month until September hearing thats over $1,400 a day.( I'm not sure if that number is accurate) I'm not a mathematician but that's like $528,000 per year, and by the time the kid is 18, Nas will have paid $9,504,000. (Ray Carruth Flash Back). Nas once wrote a song called "Undying Love"

The Ability to Write

Jennifer Ogunsola is an up and coming journalist on a mission to make a name for herself in the literary world. She grew up in Baltimore, MD, and has also lived in Philadelphia, PA and New York City. Jennifer graduated from Temple University with a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science. She holds a M.A. in Publications Design with an emphasis in Writing from the University of Baltimore (May 2009). During her time in undergraduate and graduate school, she completed internships at Radio One Inc., Black Entertainment Television Networks (BET), and TRACE magazine. When Jennifer started college she was more interested in producing than writing, however after writing two shows for BET things began to change. It was during the summer of 2004, while interning with BET, that she realized that her love for writing could manifest into a fulfilling career. In August 2004, the senior show writer for 106 & Park told Jennifer that her writing was extremely impressive, and encouraged her to seriously consider writing as a career. Two months later, in the fall of 2004, she published her first editorial piece in the Temple News Newspaper. Since then, Jennifer's love and dedication to writing has been very rewarding and her appreciation for writing has expanded tremendously.

Jennifer has written for BET, a national and international cable television network. Her editorial work, which focuses on fashion, health, politics, and lifestyle and culture, has appeared in TRACE, Avenue Report, and B magazines. Jennifer has written on behalf of the Mayor of Baltimore City during her time as Communications and Public Relations Associate at the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts. Writing is Jennifer's passion; however, there are no limits to her talents and skills. She has done production work with Radio One, Inc., producing a talk radio show on 1010 AM- WOLB that focused on entertainment, politics, and youth empowerment. At BET, she worked on three prominent TV shows, The Center, 106 & Park, and Dr. Bobby Jones Gospel. Jennifer also worked on the 2008 BET Hip-Hop Awards. The BET Network reaches more than 87 million households according to Nielsen media research, and can been seen in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. Jennifer has also done communications consultant work for OmniBlue Marketing. Here she developed a college representative program and has written for their monthly newsletters.

Jennifer is an active member in journalistic organizations that helps her keep abreast of what's important and what's on the horizon in journalism, as well as aiding her in enhancing her journalistic style. Several of these organizations include: the International Radio and Television Society, the National Association of Black Journalists and Society of Professional Journalists.

Jennifer works as the editorial assistant for Avenue Report Magazine, produces a show on 1010 AM- WOLB, a Radio One station, and is currently working on her first book.

If You are a Hip-Hop Head & You're from Baltimore City & You're still not familiar with Skarr Akbar, Then I truly don't know what to say about you. This Guy has been putting it down for Baltimore Hip-Hop for a VERY VERY long Time, long before our Town was even getting recognition for its Music. With His Sharp Delivery & Charismatic Energy it's Hard not to see Him Perform & be Captivated by His Performance.





Skarr – Akbar was born Stephen Tatum on the Westside of Baltimore, MD. Raised by a single mother of 3, music has always played a major role in his life. In grade school he learned to play the trumpet and like most black households, the sounds of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and George Clinton were in regular rotation. But, it was when a 10 year old Stephen walked into Baltimore Arena and saw Run DMC, The Fat Boys and LL Cool J rocks the stage that an emcee was born.

Skarr hone his skill as one of B-More’s most respected battle rapper. He has gone toe to toe with some of the industry best, like Method Man, Ghostface Killa, and Eminem. It was a battle with Onyx that landed him a spot on the Survival of the Illest tour back in 1998. Skarr polished he punch lines and delivery the on the battle ground, but please believe he is nice with the pen. He has even penned lyric for Bad Boy artist Cheri Dennis.

His music is truth. “I write what I know, what I’ve been through cause I don’t know nothing else.” He knows the streets very well, and has the battle scars to prove it, but he doesn’t brag about it. Skarr emerged after the death of his best friend/cousin. “Skarr-Akbar is my alter-ego. He is the voice and Stephen is the brains behind the voice.” He has something for everyone. From the dope boy to the club heads, if they want it Skarr-Akbar got it. With 15 mix tapes under his belt, all independently produced and distributed, he has proven to be the streets favorite.

As a father of 3, Skarr Akbar’s ambitions don’t end at the studio. “I want to me a mogul like Russ, Jay, Dre and Em.” He wants to give back to community and show the kids of Baltimore that anything is possible. Skarr has also been bitten by the acting bug while shooting episodes of HBO’s hit drama The Wire. He has produced 2 documentaries and is currently working on a screenplay. “Music is my first love…I need it like you need oxygen, but I am not one dimensional.”

Skarr-Akbar has been in the game for a longtime. He has battled the industry’s best, dropped 15 mixed tapes and has won the respect of his hometown and the industry…so when asked why does he keep doing it, “I’m ambitious and passionate. God blessed me with a gift and I have to use it.” Enough said.

The Game Needs "Law & Order" & That's Exactly What BOSSMAN brings to the Game. Ever Since they Let Him in the Game He has Continued to "Break Us Off" with HOT MUSIC!! I've been Blessed to have Known "Travis Holifield" for many many years even before the music. Travis began his rapping career as a part of N.E.K (Northeast Kings), The rap group gained a moderate level of popularity throughout Baltimore, Back then Travis was known as "Jimmy Hash". With all the dedication in the World, I've watched Travis Emerge from "Jimmy Hash" to "BOSSMAN". I Think it's Safe to say BOSSMAN has paid His Dues. Everyone Knows "You Gotta Pay The Cost To Be The BOSS"





So often we've heard stories of young African-American males succumbing to the call of inner city street life by chasing the dream of expensive cars and fast money. Having parents who battled drug addiction and were in and out of prison, one would expect a child to be influenced by the major authority figures in their lives but not Travis "Bossman" Holifield, who found sanctuary in writing and creating music. Growing up in Baltimore City home of HBO's "The Wire" and "Homicide: Life on the Streets", Bossman was able to put a positive spin on the negative light that his city has been placed in creating and selling hit mix tapes which would give birth to Baltimore's street anthem "O" and the hit singles "I Did It" and "Off da Record" which was a five minute record that flooded the Mid-Atlantic as it touched on real life topics such as politics relating not only to music but the world and religion . These songs and four others were produced by 1 Up Entertainment who has also produced tracks for mainstream artist such as Keyshia Cole, J-Lo, Jahiem, Raheem DeVaughn, Sisqo, and Ice Cube. Those mix tape would go on to sell 25,000 copies leading to Bossman's independently released "Law and Order" which sold 10,000 copies just months after it's release date. With a successful grind and remarkable hustle Bossman's dreams seemed within reach when in 2005, he was approached by Jermaine Dupri who signed him to Virgin Records just thirty minutes after their initial meeting. Although the relationship with Virgin Records would be a brief one, Bossman had three songs in heavy rotation and sold an additional 30,000 mix tapes before he and Virgin would part ways in the summer of 2007. To some this would be a set-back but to Bossman this was his time to shine having his songs "So Fresh" and "A-Yo" on "The Wire: Season 5" Soundtrack as well as the hit "Handclap" produced by Rocwilder on NBA Live 2007. Bossman also continues to perform throughout the US and is currently working on his latest album "Home of The Wire" which will allow him to musically express real life struggles relating to life in Baltimore City the way only a native Baltimorean can. The album will also include a video documentary based on his life experiences and proving that nothing is impossible.
